Okay so I have a problem with this(several in fact), not because he didn’t say what I am sure everyone wanted him to say, but because of this:
After Sakura’s flash back she says only this little bit out loud (suki dai yo, to like/love something) and unless she had said the subject out loud too there’s really no way for Nozaki to know(or even guess) what it was the she loved, (since the word she used can be translated and used in many different ways). She could have been saying she loves the monkey bars or the night time for all he knew, so it would have been difficult for him to assumed exactly what she meant.
Also in response to that Nozaki looks at her seriously and says something we can’t hear due to the fireworks.
It takes about 10 seconds to say (keep this in mind). It doesn’t seem that long, but you can say quite a bit in 10 seconds.
When it’s clear that she didn’t hear Nozaki and she says “Huh, what?”
He looks surprised, you know mouth slightly open, eyes a little wider. He also pauses for only a brief moment and the surprise disappears when he tries again to say it.
That’s when we get the unfortunate ”I feel the same way, I love fireworks” scene. Only there’s something wrong there. (Aside from the fact that Sakura never said the word fireworks) It’s that both ‘I feel the same way’ and ‘I love fireworks’ takes 2 seconds each to say (so only a four second exchange total), where as whatever Nozaki had said before took 10 seconds. So clearly he said something different, apparently extremely different by how serious he looked when he first said it and chose not to repeat it.
Do you see him?! This dork is smiling the entire time he said he loves fireworks. This is the same guy who has only smiled a select few times. And that is not a regular smile, that is a mischievous Cheshire-cat smile okay?
So just my personal opinion after watching, and rewatching, and rewatching this scene is that when Sakura said what she did, Nozaki knew it wasn’t the fireworks she was referring to, because he knows Sakura and she’s always thinking about other people rather than her surroundings. So he turned to reply to her and says something in those 10 seconds we couldn’t hear him, probably akin to that he liked her or that she was important to him ect.
Only she didn’t hear him, and when he saw that, he was slightly surprised and changed tactics last minute (maybe because he likes their relationship that way it is for now). He leans in and says something different, something shorter. Instead of letting her worry that he heard her feelings, he makes a joke that implies he misheard/misunderstood her, as you can tell by that sly smile above. And makes her laugh the same why he did when they first met.
Take my theory as you will, this is just what I got from the finale
